There has been a considerable amount of nasty viruses and flu in and around Europe this winter – following what was the worst flu season in Australia for 20 years….
If you are someone that has beaten it off so far, or you are in recovery, there are some important tips I can share with you that might just help you bounce back.
Come on – lets give your body a hand!
Love Your Gut.
There is approximately 70% or so of your immune system down there! By taking a good quality probiotic, it can go a long way in supporting a health immune system. There are many out there on the market – so look for one that has many different strains of bacteria – as each different species does a different job!
Sleep is where you get a healthy overhaul of your system. If you feel like you’re getting sick, go take a nap and let your immune system do its thing!

Made from the sun…but – where’s is the sun?! As it’s winter, many of us see our Vitamin D levels dip with decreased sunlight. Vitamin D is an amazing nutrient that helps balance our immune system and is a great viral support. Most people do well to supplement of 3000IU daily, but the best way to know is to test – ask you doctor for this..

Wash Your Hands.
It is super effective! Remember that viruses love to get into your mouth, nose and eyes. The fastest route? Well, rather than a direct sneeze or getting up close with someone already infected – your hands can actually help the virus fast track you the infection. Wash your hands before meals, after being in public and of course after using the bathroom!
What about when you are sick?
Sip Bone Broth.
This is another daily habit I have adopted (but throughout the year!). Sipping on bone broth not only feeds your gut, but provides you with key immune supporting nutrients. If your veggie or vegan, then make a well cooked vegetable & seaweed broth, then add unpastuerised miso paste after it has cooked.
Drink Plenty of Warm Fluids.
Herbal teas are great such as rosehip, chamomile, echinecea, olive leaf or fresh ginger
Take a clove (cut up) of raw garlic and add it to your food just before you eat. Don’t cook it, or it will spoil some of the nutrients!
Rest, rest and rest some more.
Do a Steam Inhalation.
A steamy bowl of water, a big towel to make a tent over your head and a few drops of essential oils can bring relief to headaches, sinus pressure, and open up those airways. Try eucalyptus, oregano, peppermint, and Frankincense, but be careful not to use too much oil, 2-3 drops is usually ample.
Eat Your Vitamin A!
Vitamin A is necessary for immune function and is used to treat many viruses…the flu being no exception.
